About Us

Dunkin Donuts

How We Started

Kings Point Venture's roots date back to 1995, when our Founder and Chairman Tom Hughes decided to enter the Dunkin' Donuts Business. He knew he did not want to go it alone, so he recruited his college classmates Alex Smigelski and Tom Carpenter from the United States Merchant Marine Academy to join in the journey. Today, KP Ventures is one of the larger operators of Dunkin' Donuts locations in New York, Connecticut, and South Central Pennsylvania-and most recently Indianapolis markets.

How we operate

KP Ventures operates Dunkin' Donuts stores in many locations on the East Coast, and most recently acquired the entire Indianapolis and Fort Wayne markets. We will be developing this market over the next four to five years. We think we are a company that employees enjoy working with, and we credit a lot of our success to the happiness of our employees. We gauge our success via following for measures: Customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, overall profitability and community involvement

Our Commitment to Our Customers

We believe that our stores hold great opportunity for the customer and KP Ventures employees. KPV is growing every day, and as such we feel it is important to remember the values we set forth for all employees, from our crew to our managing partners.

  1. We are passionate that our guests are satisfied
  2. We deeply value our employee's satisfaction
  3. We strive to be the best
  4. We create a fun and safe working environment

Meet Our Team

Thomas J. Hughes, Chairman

Mr. Hughes financed many franchise companies in the early 90s, and decided to start his own franchise company after a positive experience. He chose to involve himself in the Dunkin' world because he strongly believes in the large opportunity for growth across the company. He recruited classmates from the US Merchant Marine Academy Alex Smigelski and Tom Carpenter to accelerate the growth of KP Ventures into a large operator of Dunkin’ Donuts across the state of CT, The Bronx, New Jersey, Central PA, and most recently the Indianapolis markets. Before forming Kings Point Ventures in 2006, Mr. Hughes was most recently the CEO of a small a boutique investment bank.

His tenure there lasted from May 2011 through May of 2013. Before that, Mr. Hughes held a number of top management positions at large firms ranging in specialty from real estate to asset management. Mr. Hughes received a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He has served as a member of the board for organizations including the International Monetary Fund and Hospital for Special Surgery, and continues as a board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tom has been married to his wife Ginny for over 30 years, and they have 3 daughters.

Alex Smigelski Jr, Chief Executive Officer

Under Mr. Smigelski’s leadership, KP Ventures has become one of the largest and most respected franchises in the Dunkin' system. Mr. Smigelski has developed the infrastructure of KP Ventures, allowing for significant growth in the coming years. During the past 7 years, Mr. Smigelski has served on several high level executive committees at Dunkin’ Brands, as well as serving as a board member for the independently owned Dunkin’ Brands Distribution & Supply Corp. Currently, Mr. Smigelski is the Treasurer for the Dunkin’ Donuts Bas

kin Robbins Community Foundation, the charitable arm of Dunkin’ Brands and its Franchisees. Mr. Smigelski is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, with a degree in Marine Transportation. While at the Academy he excelled in competitive sailing, captaining the varsity sailing team to two national championships during his senior year. His personal sailing honors are impressive, three time All-American, College Sailor of the Year and the recipient of the Giles P. Steadman Award for the outstanding athlete at the academy

Thomas P. Carpenter, Chief Operating Officer

For the past 7 years, Mr. Carpenter has been the COO of Kings Point Ventures where he has been directly involved in the design, construction, and operation of all KP Ventures existing stores. Earlier in his career, Mr. Carpenter graduated the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering; Mr. Carpenter spent the next nine years in various roles with the Maritime Industry. Three of those years were spent in the oil industry where Mr. Carpenter rose to the rank of Second Assistant Engineer. The next six years were spent with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, where he ascended the ladder to Chief Engineer, and served the final two years there as Port Engineer. From 1988 to 2000, Mr. Carpenter moved to the Consolidated Edison

Company serving various roles in multiple locations throughout the NY metropolitan area. He worked as a Watch supervisor, Outage Manager, and Superintendent of Operations in the Power Generation Department, as well as Account Executive to Colleges and Universities in the Customer Service Department. During his tenure, Mr. Carpenter earned his Certificate of Energy Management from NY Institute of Technology. For the 7 years prior to re-uniting with his classmates at KP Ventures, Mr. Carpenter was the Director of Facility Engineering at the American Broadcast Company in NY, where he was responsible for the electrical and HVAC needs of over 2 million sq ft of office and studio space.
